Social Justice Warriors, you’ve got to love ‘em. If they’re not screaming their little heads off about the ‘Gender Pay Gap’ then they’re outing xenophobes and racists here there and everywhere.
And when they’re not patrolling Twitter and Facebook, teeth gnashing and indignation surging through every spore of their little, trembling, politically correct bodies, they’re denouncing the evils of capitalism from their I-phones while gorging themselves stupid on a Subway 10-incher, all washed down with a gluppy Starbucks Caramel Latte Cappuccino. Bless.
Until one of his tweets ended up on my Twitter timeline I had never heard of Arron Banks, but I certainly recognised the self-righteous tone of a twitter witch-hunt when I saw it.
Mr Banks was being harassed by some very indignant people, including an individual who works for the Guardian and the BBC (that figures). Incandescent with rage, the Twitter lynch mob were in full attack mode.
Overwhelmed by their own piety and sincerity they huffed and they puffed. They were mad, real mad.
But wherefore the rage? What on earth had Mr Banks done to inspire such pious indignation? Had he committed some heinous crime? Had he engaged in unnatural acts with plasticine or, god forbid, with pizza delivery boys?
Browsing some of the tweets sent his way, Mr Banks must have done something unforgiveable and more than likely, judging by the virulence of the tweets, perhaps even illegal too.
Becoming ever more curious I decided to investigate further.
Moments later I read the incriminating tweet. For the purpose of brevity allow me to paraphrase Mr Bank’s tweet: There are virtually no Muslims in Japan. There. That’s just about the long and short of it – the tweet that inflamed the Twitter-hate mob.
Hell hath no fury than a triggered SJW. Torrential scorn and ridicule came Mr Bank’s way. Was he demented, Islamophobic, racist or just a combination of all three, they frothed?
One wag even went so far as locating the number of mosques in Tokyo – all four of them. The tweeter couldn’t hide his glee. Had he cared to check a little bit farther his triumphalism would have surely melted upon learning the total number of mosques in the entire country: 80.
I read the tweets with a mixture of horror and hilarity. It was the usual SJW idiocy: scream, howl and yell at anyone who states an idea that contradicts their cherished and very deeply held Left-wing group-think doctrines.
In the simplistic mind of an SJW the world is a terrible, unjust place and they have been put upon this earth to right all those wrongs, specifically selected to fight those fat, greedy capitalists of Starbucks and Apple who make life such a misery…
Like a pack of triggered wolves, the Twitter lynch mob were snarling. They mocked Mr Bank’s claim that Muslims were an insignificant part of the Japanese population. “Source?” asked one gloating member of the mob, before answering his own question with: “Oh yeah, because Banks didn’t personally see any…”
As someone who has not only studied Japanese language and culture, but also has extensive experience of teaching Japanese students, I was intrigued. I know full well that while not banned, Islam is a religion viewed with a great deal of circumspect and even suspicion by the Japanese.
So what exactly were the Twitter mob out to prove?
“Haha,” sneered one of their number, referring back to Mr Bank’s claims that there are “virtually” no Muslims in Japan. The mob laughed and howled at that assertion. How could he be so ignorant, so racist..? Blah, blah, blah.
“You are of course aware,” tweeted I to the hate-mob and now in full SJW mode myself (guess I just can’t resist an underdog) “that the Muslim population in Japan is 0.13%....”
I also opined that this admittedly rather inconvenient statistic might explain why Mr Banks had indeed not seen many Muslims on his trip to Japan. With an (at best) estimated 100,000 Muslims in a total population of almost 140 million, there’s a high probability that should our incensed little band of SJWs ever wash up on Japanese shores, they would probably not see too many Muslims either.
In other words, Mr Bank's perceptions had been factually correct. Islam is indeed a minority religion in Japan and Muslims are indeed a tiny minority in terms of overall population.
The SJW mob went temporarily silent, facts being to an SJW what a crucifix is to Dracula.
Meanwhile I decided to check out Mr Banks. Imagine my surprise when it turned out that Arron Banks is none other than a major and very rich UKIP donor… Suddenly it all made sense.
Just as I made this discovery I found myself the object of the Twitter hate mob’s attentions. I won’t go into the content of the tweets, suffice to say that none was able to offer any kind of logical counter-argument to my ‘hate’ fact.
They stamped their little Doc-Martined feet, oh how they stamped their feet. They almost burst the seams of their skinny jeans and rainbow leggings. Facts! Apart from the Gradgrinds and Bounderbys of this world, who needs facts? Not when you’ve got notions, not when you’ve got vague generalisations, not when your head is swimming with Polly Toynbee inspired Guardian memes.
Facts are like, just so last century, yah?
Twitter, the natural home of the ignorant, the lazy and the easily-led. The natural home to 3rd class thought zombies. A place of comfort for the self-righteous, the indignant, the complacent and the simplistic:
Twitter, the natural environment of the Social Justice Warrior.
