Astonishing because with potentially tens of millions of migrants intent on reaching Western – not Eastern Europe, it was an open invitation for just about anybody from anywhere to simply up sticks and head for Europe without any form of due process. It was like Tesco throwing open their doors and shouting “Fill your boots – it’s all free!”
What is more, the woman made the invitation without any consultation with her European partners. Merkel correctly calculated that there was political capital to be made amongst the bleeding heart liberals that own and run Europe’s media, calculated too that a huge influx of pro-Merkel migrants to Germany could only consolidate her own political position in that country in the years to come.
A double whammy then: political power guaranteed and with it very likely a Nobel Peace Prize for her act of compassion: win-win for Merkel. The lefty-owned media were delighted. The Mad Frau had spoken and now it was for the rest of Europe to follow her humanity.
The bleeding hearts of countries like Sweden and the UK rubbed their hands together with glee – mass, largely Islamic immigration into Europe was about to become a reality. They couldn’t wait. The charitable, legal, media and political classes were positively drooling: for migrants = causes = jobs = money.
But already the cracks were showing in Merkel’s master-plan. Despite efforts by the German media to stifle debate, stories began to emerge of a less than rosy multicultural Germany. Reports from the German city of Duisburg revealed how police officers, under threat of assault, no longer patrol certain areas of a city heavily populated by immigrants.
The Swedish city of Malmo and others like it has experienced similar ghettoisation, with areas of the city strictly off limits to the indigenous population. A walk through the streets of Bradford reveals a similar state of affairs in the UK. Multiculturalism has failed, spectacularly so, but that inconvenient fact has still failed to register with Merkel and the rest of the bleeding heart set.
Or maybe it has.
For in the last week or so there has been a rather interesting change in the rhetoric, at least from Germany. With hundreds of thousands of ‘desperate’ migrants heading for Bavaria, Germany performed a sudden and very spectacular U-turn. The million migrants they had initially invited to the land of the bratwurst suddenly slimmed down to 120,000.. Oops. As with all bleeding heart liberals the realities were not quite the same as the theory. While Germany squirmed, its European neighbours looked askance. What would the Mad Frau do next?
Easy. Insist that Europe share the burden. The millions of migrants headed Germany’s way could be shared out, like smarties. Merkel had her get out of jail card! Let Europe clear up the mess she had created, let other countries clothe, feed, educate and house endless streams of migrants.
With a European media oh so anxious to prove its humanity, and an equally subservient EU dripping with bleeding heart theorists, it was going to be a walk in the park. And it has been.
British PM David Cameron, already unable to manage record levels of migration into the UK, duly wilted. Where he ought to have stood firm and statesmanlike, the Prime Minister meekly gave in to Merkel and the UK’s admittedly very vocal immigration apologists. Others have followed.
But amid the predictable and deplorable media pressure that has followed in the wake of Germany’s U-turn, some countries have refused to give in to the emotional blackmail and propaganda of the pro-mass immigration apologists.
Hungary and Slovakia are just two countries which have been vilified for refusing to bow to Merkel’s bully-boy tactics. Unlike David Cameron, the Prime Ministers of these two countries have stood firm, have taken the very courageous decision not to be bullied by the small, but extremely vocal band of middle-class do-gooders.
Defending their citizen’s rights to live in Christian democracies, Viktor Urban and Robert Fico have held their nerve, proving to be voices of sanity and reason amid this left-wing feeding frenzy of pious indignation.
And what of Mrs Merkel? What exactly has become of the women who is so ready to change the fabric of European life for ever? Why the silence? Should she not be proudly surveying the ravages of her open door policy? The silence tells its own story.
Angela Merkel will go down in history as the woman who put her own political objectives above those of her nation and her continent. The actions of this woman have been nothing short of cavalier and wilfully opportunistic.
But worse than that, in attempting to bully proud nations into submission, in attempting to blackmail countries like Hungary and Slovakia into covering up her own gross incompetence, this woman has exposed the nasty underbelly of lefty politics – its utter inability to accept responsibility for its actions.
“Ladies and gentleman I give you Angela Merkel, humanist.” I can hear it now, the sycophantic applause at conference after conference once the German people have come to their senses and ejected this dangerous woman from power. Here’s an epitaph they won’t be adding:
“May I present to you the Mad Frau herself…
Angela Merkel…Hypocrite, traitor and coward.”
